In the American Civil War, my paternal third-great-grandfather, Andrew Jackson Wiley, a Union Army Soldier from Johnson County, Kentucky, was pitted against my maternal Brashear great-granduncles and cousins from Perry County, Kentucky, who were soldiers in “Colonel Ben Caudill’s Regiment” in the Confederate States Army.

It was unlikely that they had any contact before wartime. Not until my birth in World War II, did their blood lines blend together within my veins, forming the first Sellards – Wiley – Caudill – Littleton – Lowe – Combs – Brashear family tree line.

Brashear Soldiers in the Confederate States Army, 10th Regiment, Kentucky Mounted Rifles, AKA 13th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry AKA “Colonel Ben Caudill’s Regiment”:
~ Ezekial Brashear (1826-1864), was Killed In Action at the Battle of Cynthiana.
~ Harvey Gray Brashear (1835-1918) wrote a Civil War Letter, dated July 1, 1864, which survived. I transcribed it in the section, Glimpses Into Wartime. Harvey mentioned the Battle of Mt. Sterling and the circumstances of other Brashear kinsman in his outfit.
~ Hezekiah Brashear (1843-1930).
~ Isaac Brashear (1818-1881).
~ James N. “Stubb” Brashear, Jr. (1835-1920).
~ Jesse C. Brashear (1837-1930).
~ John L. Brashear, Jr. (1832-1864) was captured by the Union Army, became a Prisoner of War, and died at Camp Douglas Union Prison, Chicago, Illinois.
~ Sampson Brashear (1838-1898) was wounded in the Battle of Mt. Sterling, left on the battlefield, captured by the Union Army the next day, became a Prisoner of War, received medical treatment in a Lexington Union Hospital and was transferred to Rock Island Union Prison Camp in Illinois. When the war ended, he returned home “a mere skeleton from a Union prison”.
~ Sampson Brashear (1844-1864), was Killed In Action, American Civil War. Did his place of burial indicate that he had been killed in the Battle of Mt. Sterling?
~ Samuel Ray Brashear (1841-1870), was captured by the Union Army, became a Prisoner of War, transferred to Union Military Prison, Johnson’s Island, Sandusky Bay, Lake Erie and survived.

DATE OF BIRTH: Knowing Andrew Jackson Wiley’s birth year (circa 1825 – circa 1831), could be a truer indication concerning which one of his father’s five wives, was his mother. In the book, Appalachia Crossroads, Descendants of Hezekiah Sellards, Volume 1 by Clayton R. Cox, Andrew Jackson was born circa 1825 and his father’s first wife, Nellie Dillon was listed as his mother. On the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census, Andrew Jackson was born circa 1831. Therefore, Sarah O’Bryan, his father’s second wife, could be his mother.
FATHER: William Wiley. Five marriages: William wed first in 1823, Nellie Dillon; wed second in 1830, Sarah O’Bryan; wed third in 1835, Mary Dorton; wed fourth in 1849, Nancy Tackett (mother-in-law of his son, Andrew Jackson Wiley); and wed fifth in 1865, Margaret Murray.
MOTHER: Nellie Dillon (first wife) OR Sarah O’Bryan (second wife) of William Wiley.

In the American Civil War, my paternal third-great-grandfather, Andrew Jackson Wiley, a Union Army Soldier from Johnson County, Kentucky, was pitted against my maternal Brashear great-uncles and cousins, who were Confederate Army Soldiers from Perry County, Kentucky. It was unlikely that they had any contact before wartime.

     Not until my birth in World War II, did their blood lines blend together within my veins, forming the first Sellards – Wiley – Caudill – Littleton – Lowe – Combs – Brashear family tree line.

~ Ezekial Brashear (1826-1864), was Killed In Action at the Battle of Cynthiana.
~ Harvey Gray Brashear (1835-1918) wrote a Civil War Letter, dated July 1, 1864, which survived. I transcribed it in the section, Glimpses Into Wartime. Harvey mentioned the Battle of Mt. Sterling and the circumstances of other Brashear kinsman in his outfit.
~ Hezekiah Brashear (1843-1930).
~ Isaac Brashear (1818-1881).
~ James N. “Stubb” Brashear, Jr. (1835-1920).
~ Jesse C. Brashear (1837-1930).
~ John L. Brashear, Jr. (1832-1864) was captured by the Union Army, became a Prisoner of War, and died at Camp Douglas Union Prison, Chicago, Illinois.
~ Sampson Brashear (1838-1898) was wounded in the Battle of Mt. Sterling, left on the battlefield, captured by the Union Army the next day, became a Prisoner of War, received medical treatment in a Lexington Union Hospital and was transferred to Rock Island Union Prison Camp in Illinois. When the war ended, he returned home “a mere skeleton from a Union prison”.
~ Sampson Brashear (1844-1864), was Killed In Action, American Civil War. Did his place of burial indicate that he had been killed in the Battle of Mt. Sterling?
~ Samuel Ray Brashear (1841-1870), was captured by the Union Army, became a Prisoner of War, transferred to Union Military Prison, Johnson’s Island, Sandusky Bay, Lake Erie and survived.
