ASA HARMON “ACY” McCOY (1828-1865) ENLISTED IN THE UNION ARMY DURING THE CIVIL WAR. HE WAS GIVEN A MILITARY FURLOUGH HOME. ON THE RETURN TRIP BACK TO HIS REGIMENT, HE WAS TRACKED AND KILLED ON 7 JANUARY 1865. HE WAS THE BROTHER OF RANDOLPH “RANDALL” McCOY (1825-1914), WHO WOULD HAVE FIVE OF HIS CHILDREN MURDERED DURING THE FEUD: TOLBERT, PHARMER, RANDOLPH, JR., CALVIN AND ALIFAIR.

IN 1881, SARAH AND RANDOLPH McCOY’S DAUGHTER, ROSEANNA McCOY (1859-1889), HAD A DAUGHTER, BY JOHNSE HATFIELD, SON OF WILLIAM ANDERSON “DEVIL ANSE” HATFIELD (1837-1920) AND LEVISA CHAFIN. JOHNSE MARRIED NANCY McCOY, DAUGHTER OF MARTHA CLINE AND ASA HARMON McCOY (1828-1865). NANCY AND ROSEANNA WERE FIRST COUSINS. ROSEANNA’S DAUGHTER DIED BEFORE REACHING HER FIRST BIRTHDAY.

IN AN ELECTION DAY FIGHT IN AUGUST 1882, ELLISON HATFIELD (1842-1882), BROTHER OF WILLIAM ANDERSON “DEVIL ANSE” HATFIELD, DIED AFTER ENGAGING IN A FIGHT WITH ONE OR MORE OF RANDOLPH McCOY’S SONS.

ON AUGUST 9, 1882, RANDOLPH McCOY'S SONS, TOLBERT, PHARMER AND RANDOLPH, JR. WERE TIED TO PAWPAW BUSHES AND MURDERED BY GUNSHOTS.

ON JANUARY 1, 1888, THE McCOY HOMEPLACE WAS BURNED TO THE GROUND. RANDOLPH'S SON AND DAUGHTER, CALVIN AND ALIFAIR WERE INSIDE THE BURNING HOUSE. WHEN THEY RAN OUTSIDE TO ESCAPE THE FLAMES, THEY WERE SHOT AND KILLED. RANDOLPH"S WIFE, SARAH WAS BEATEN ON THE ICE COLD GROUND AND LEFT TO DIE. SHE WAS UNABLE TO MOVE, TRAPPED BY HER BLOODY HAIR AND HEAD, WHICH HAD FROZEN SOLID AGAINST THE EARTH. RANDOLPH AND SARAH SURVIVED THE ATTACK.

The red, white and blue quilt honored Hatfield and McCoy Civil War Soldiers and World War II Soldiers. The quiltmakers were America Hatfield McCoy and Rhoda Hall McCoy, who were sister-in-laws, living in Pike County, Kentucky during World War II. America Hatfield married Frank McCoy, and Rhoda Hall married Asa Harmon “Bud” McCoy, Sr. Frank and Asa were the sons of Mary Elizabeth Coleman and Larkin H. McCoy.

~ “Allen Williamson ... of Pike County, Kentucky, was the first person to arrive at the home of Randolph McCoy on the morning of January 2, 1888, after the Hatfields [had] killed Calvin and Allifair McCoy. They burned the McCoy home on the night of January 1st. Sarah McCoy, Randolph’s wife was wounded. Williamson found her frozen to the ground by her hair, by the blood from her wound.
