IN 1863 AMID THE CHAOS OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR, THE WESTERN PART OF VIRGINIA, INCLUDING WAYNE COUNTY, WAS ADMITTED TO THE UNION AS THE THIRTY-FIFTH STATE AND WAS GIVEN THE NAME OF WEST VIRGINIA.

THE 1890 VETERANS SCHEDULES OF CIVIL WAR MILITARY SERVICE WAS FOR UNION SOLDIERS ONLY.  BUT IN WAYNE COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA, CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS DEFIED AUTHORITIES BY HAVING THEIR NAMES AND MILITARY SERVICE LISTED WITH THE UNION SOLDIERS.  LATER A LINE WAS DRAWN ACROSS THE CONFEDERATE DATA, BUT THE WORDS WERE STILL READABLE.  EQUAL DOCUMENTATION OF ALL MILITARY SERVICE IN THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR OCCURRED IN WAYNE COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA.

The heroic Captain was soon felled by a mini-ball, which shot out an eye and left him dying on the battlefield ... COMBAT ORGANIZATION:  Company K, 8th Cavalry, Confederate States Army, Civil War.
BATTLES, CAMPAIGNS, THEATRES:  The unit “participated in [Confederate General Jubal A.] Early’s Shenandoah Valley operation and the Appomattox Campaign.  This regiment contained 225 effectives in April 1864.  However, none were included in the surrender at Appomattox, because it had cut through the Federal lines and disbanded.”  Thus, the CSA Eighth Cavalry refused to surrender their rifles to the Union Army in an acknowledgement of defeat.  Colonel James M. 1890 VETERANS SCHEDULE (FOR UNION SOLDIERS ONLY):  Many Wayne County Confederate Soldiers registered on the Veterans Schedule, knowing that only Union Soldiers were to be listed on the forms.  In defiance of being excluded, Samuel J. Ferguson boldly gave his Civil War information.  A line was drawn through his name, but the information was readable.
